Applied media research

Finally uploading the quotes from the authors we interviewed last week:

Jeff young

(On do you embrace new technology?)

Yes I do but not as much as the younger generation, I’ve been a writer for over 20 years but I’m less involved and media literate as the young ones now. I think I have a fear of it and lack confidence, but I do embrace it.

(On do writers create a story or a world?)

In research I use a lot of contact with audience

I think that online stories are very sophisticated and I would be interested in writing one if the opportunity ever arose

I attended a course put on by the guardian on interactive stories and other creative opportunities that was very interesting I have no qualms with audience contribution and audience choices I have just not done anything like that yet although I would like to.

Nothing is sacred (apart from classics like Ulysses) in the new era and we need adaptability as well as a healthy relationship with the audience.

The gap between producers and audience is less now, it’s all about cottage industries where you make and produce everything yourself, It’s organic. I think it’s very good for the future industry.

Art needs to be removed from manufacturing monsters.

Google creates filter bubbles which can be bad sometimes but it does let you operate as a cottage industry yourself and make, distribute and promote the things you make.

Charlie Cossgrove

(on do you like the idea of a multiplatform/ transmedia experiences?)

No I much prefer old fashioned ‘straight cut’ books. You can’t beat a book and even though I know we need to adapt and move with the times if we want to make it but personally I don’t want to.

(on fan involvement)

I hate the idea of fanfiction, especially if It’s not done well.

If there was a game and stuff for fans to play id give control to someone else to make it but I would want it to stay the same as the book. It would give new idea and stuff and make money but I wouldn’t want it to change anything from the book.

Claire Doran

As a child I loved those books where you could choose your own ending, I liked having that option to do what I wanted.

I really like multiplatform experiences and although I have never done one or thought of doing one for that matter I think it’s really interesting and I would like to see what I could do with my own novel.
